Nurse Practitioner, Suzanne Sewell, joined Arizona's Family to talk about Dignity Health St. Joseph's new cardiometabolic clinic. Cardiometabolic disorders are more common than we think.
Cardiometabolic syndrome involves a combination of conditions that can increase the risk of cardiovascular events, such as stroke, heart disease, or peripheral vascular disease, by up to four times. A diagnosis generally requires three or more of the following criteria:
- High blood pressure: Defined by new guidelines as blood pressure greater than 130/80.
- Elevated cholesterol: This includes high triglycerides or fatty particles in the blood, as well as low HDL levels.
- Obesity: Specifically abdominal obesity, measured as greater than 35 inches for women and greater than 40 inches for men.
- Elevated glucose: Levels greater than 100 or the use of diabetes medication.
