Cancer 3B to NED

After not signing a work contract, I went in for a mammogram and was diagnosed with aggressive stage 3B grade 3 metastatic breast cancer with lymph node involvement. At first, I was refusing standard treatment and went with a place called Sunridge Medical Center in Phoenix where I did six weeks IV therapies. We ended up at Mayo Clinic and after my first round of chemotherapy, my tumor doubled in size and I had to go under general anesthesia for lumpectomy and full lymph node dissection, removing 24 lymph nodes. six weeks after surgery my tumor markers in my blood were still very high, which was very concerning to my oncology team, but by the end of chemotherapy, I made it to no evidence of disease. On the 2 hour drive home from my last chemo round there was a rainbow in the middle of the desert. I’ve learned a lot about cancer through this process. Each step of the way I wanted to refuse treatment, but what I’ve learned is that cancer is like glitter, you can try to clean it all up, but they’re still going to be remnants left behind. Living in the desert has taught me about goats heads a nasty weed that can lay dormant for 10 years before sprouting. That’s kind of like cancer cells too. I had to do the radiation and I have to do the chemo pill and estrogen blockers. It’s just the way cancer cells work.
