⚡ Cardiomyopathies Made Easy | Dilated vs Hypertrophic vs Restrictive ⚡
In this high-yield session, we break down the three major types of cardiomyopathies with etiology, pathogenesis, findings, and treatment — perfect for NEET PG, USMLE, NEXT, INI-CET, PLAB, and MBBS exams.
???? Types of Cardiomyopathies:
???? Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM):
Most common (90% cases).
Causes → idiopathic, genetic (TTN mutation), alcohol, doxorubicin, viral myocarditis, peripartum, hemochromatosis, thiamine deficiency, Chagas.
Findings → HF, S3, regurgitant murmurs, balloon appearance on CXR.
Dysfunction → systolic dysfunction, eccentric hypertrophy.
Tx → ACE inhibitors/ARBs, β-blockers, diuretics, ICD, transplant.
???? Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM):
Often familial (mutations in sarcomeric proteins like β-myosin heavy chain).
Path → concentric hypertrophy, myofibrillar disarray, fibrosis.
Findings → S4, harsh systolic murmur, risk of sudden cardiac death in athletes.
Dysfunction → diastolic dysfunction.
Tx → β-blockers, non-DHP CCBs, ICD if high risk (avoid preload-reducing drugs).
???? Restrictive/Infiltrative Cardiomyopathy (RCM):
Causes → amyloidosis, sarcoidosis, hemochromatosis, endocardial fibroelastosis, Löffler endocarditis.
Dysfunction → diastolic dysfunction (low-voltage ECG, esp. amyloidosis).
Associated with fibrosis + infiltrative diseases.
???? High-Yield Pearls:
✅ Dilated → systolic dysfunction.
✅ Hypertrophic → diastolic dysfunction + sudden death in young athletes.
✅ Restrictive → diastolic dysfunction due to infiltrates (amyloidosis, sarcoidosis, etc.).
✅ Stress cardiomyopathy = Takotsubo (“broken heart syndrome”) due to catecholamine surge.
???? Covers pathology, findings, ECG, echo, and treatment in a simple, exam-oriented way.
