Pojsakorn Danpanichkul, MD, a Researcher from the Department of Internal Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, TX, reviews his article appearing in the July 2025 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where looking at a cancer that typically appears in older adults, he found in the year 2021 alone, more than 400,000 new early-onset (aged 50 years and under) cases and 285,000 deaths from gastrointestinal cancer attributable to metabolic risk factors, highlighting a significant rise in this population. Dr. Danpanichkul reviews the 6 types of cancer – esophageal, gastric, liver, biliary tract, pancreatic, and colorectal – and finds colorectal cancer presenting with the highest incidence rates. He notes this emphasizes the need for a strategy that includes controlling risk factors, particularly metabolic risk factors, adoption of effective screening methods, and effective cancer management.
