GHANA’S FIRST $50M HEART CENTER IN THE NORTH NEARS COMPLETION TO BE A GAME CHANGER FOR MILLIONS

Tamale, Ghana – April 20, 2026 – Work is advancing steadily on a new Specialist Cardiology Center at the Tamale Teaching Hospital in the Northern Region, a project designed to significantly improve access to advanced cardiac care in northern Ghana.
The facility is funded by the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) under the MahamaCares initiative. It will include critical infrastructure such as a state-of-the-art cardiac catheterisation laboratory (CATHLAB), which is currently unavailable across the five regions of northern Ghana.36
President John Dramani Mahama visited the construction site on Sunday, April 19, 2026, as part of his ongoing Resetting Ghana Tour. During the inspection, which began around 10:00 a.m., the President reviewed progress, interacted with engineers and health officials, and expressed satisfaction with the pace of work. He commended the Ghana Medical Trust Fund and relevant authorities for their efforts on this life-saving project.26
The cardiology center aims to provide specialised diagnosis and treatment for heart and blood vessel conditions, including procedures that can address blockages without the need for open-heart surgery. Once operational, the CATHLAB will enable timely interventions for conditions such as heart attacks, where rapid restoration of blood flow is critical to preserving heart muscle. This development is expected to reduce the need for patients in the north to travel long distances—often to southern facilities—for emergency cardiac care, thereby saving lives and lowering associated costs.4
According to announcements, construction of the center is on track for completion in the last quarter of 2026. The project forms part of broader efforts under MahamaCares to expand specialised healthcare services at teaching hospitals, with similar cardiology initiatives reportedly planned or underway at other facilities to enhance national capacity in cardiac care.8
