The Johannesburg High Court has ordered the Gauteng Health Department
to take immediate action to provide radiation oncology services to
cancer patients on treatment backlog at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg
Academic Hospital and Steve Biko Academic Hospital.
The court ruled that the department's failure to address the backlog
was unlawful and unconstitutional.
Cancer Alliance, represented by Section27, took legal action, arguing
that the department violated patients' constitutional right to
healthcare.
Cancer Alliance CEO Salome Meyer explained further.
