Pao-Hsien Chu, MD, a Cardiologist from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Linkou, Taoyuan, Taiwan, Reviews his article appearing in the August 2025 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings where using a large multicenter Taiwanese cohort, he found HbA1c variations independently correlated with increased risk of heart failure hospitalization, in both reduced and preserved ejection fraction, as well as ischemic and non-ischemic heart failure. Dr. Chu notes variations exceeding 0.778% can serve as a simple indicator for the risk of heart failure and recommends clinicians provide close monitoring and refer patients with such variations for cardiac consultation.
