At 16, Gregory Aune, MD, PhD, now a pediatric oncologist, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. While chemotherapy and radiation treated his condition, they also caused long-term health issues. At 35, he underwent open-heart surgery for critical aortic stenosis and blocked coronaries, but later developed early heart failure due to mitral valve calcification. By 2023, he needed another heart surgery. Due to the complexity of his case, Dr. Aune sought out an expert in radiation-induced heart disease — leading him to Northwestern Medicine’s Chief of Cardiac Surgery Douglas R. Johnston, MD. Hear Dr. Aune share his journey.
