Allan Aksamit, MD, a Neurologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, shares insights from his article coauthored with Reece Hass, DO, and appearing in the April 2026 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where debilitating irritation to a patient’s diaphragm from inactive pacemaker leads that were placed decades earlier, were completely resolved after surgical removal of the leads. Dr. Aksamit notes that although abdominal pacemaker leads are rarely used today, late complications of standard pacemaker lead placement such as
lead perforation or displacement may rarely occur and mechanical stimulation from migrating pacemaker leads, or other medical devices should be considered in the differential diagnosis of intractable hiccups in the appropriate context. As it was in this case, surgical extraction of the incident pacemaker leads may result in resolution of the hiccups and improvement in quality of life. Available at: https://bit.ly/4d2TWCV
