Each year, about 209,000 Americans are told they have lung cancer, and about 132,000 people die from the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Doctors say what makes it especially dangerous is that lung cancer in particular can progress to an advanced stage long before patients notice anything is wrong. That's why they emphasize the importance of screening, early detection and advancements in treatment.

"Lung cancer can get pretty far advanced before we actually have any symptoms," Dr. Mary Maish told 13News. Maish is a thoracic surgeon with Franciscan Health.
