Barry A. Franklin, PhD, Director Emeritus of Preventive Cardiology and Cardiac Rehabilitation at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, MI, and Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, reviews his Perspective appearing online in February and in the March 2025 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where because of documented increases in the incidence of acute myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac death during winter months, he emphasizes the dangers of snow shoveling for men who generally have sedentary lifestyles or other underlying cardiac conditions. Dr. Franklin provides a comparison of the strain this activity has on the heart with the cardiac stress test, and notes in a 10-minute period, the activity could be equivalent to having lifted a ton or the weight of an automobile. He advises clinicians to counsel their patients about these risks. Available at: https://mayocl.in/4gmS9qw
