Mackenzie D. Maberry, MD, a Mayo Clinic Internal Medicine Residency Graduate and current Fellow at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, shares insights from her article appearing in the January 2026 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where she and her colleagues found the need for a previously required standard diagnostic test could be eliminated for patients with fibromyalgia. She found the link to MGUS and fibromyalgia rarely led to a future cancer diagnosis, which often required additional unnecessary and stressful appointments for patients that posed a psychological burden and did not yield helpful results. Dr. Maberry references the algorithm in the article that offers guidance for clinicians to determine when additional testing should be pursued, and she notes the results of this study also led to a change in practice at Mayo Clinic.
