Obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (or oHCM), is a chronic and progressive heart disease that causes changes in the heart muscle, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, chest pain, feeling lightheaded, fainting and fatigue. These symptoms can increase with exertion and worsen over time, significantly impacting a person’s quality of life.

That’s what happened to John, a successful former business owner with a lifelong passion for playing competitive sports like tennis and pickleball, when worsening symptoms and an eventual diagnosis of oHCM forced him to sit on the sidelines. After talking to his doctor, John found a treatment that works for him and has been able to return to his love of pickleball, including his participation in a recreational pickleball competition, open to the public.

John is a former business owner and an oHCM patient who is passionate about sharing his story to encourage people to talk to their doctors about symptoms they may be experiencing and to help inspire others with the condition. He is committed to raising awareness about the impact of oHCM on patients’ daily lives and the importance of understanding the options for treatment. John’s oHCM symptoms once prevented him from enjoying his active lifestyle. With a treatment that works for him, and with his symptoms improving, he’s been able to return to playing pickleball, an activity he loves.
