Maria Antonietta Gambacorta, MD, Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milan, Italy, comments on the results of the STAR-TREC trial (NCT02945566), a Phase II/III randomized trial on patients with early intermediate rectal cancer. Prof. Gambacorta highlights that the trial found that long-course chemoradiation resulted in a higher rate of organ preservation (80%) compared to short-course radiotherapy (61%) at one year, suggesting that long-course chemoradiation is the preferred treatment for achieving organ preservation in these patients. This interview took place at the ESTRO 2025 congress in Vienna, Austria.
