Dr Padmaja Lokireddy - Haematologist
The video is a tale of a young Somali patient diagnosed with T lymphoblastic leukaemia (TALM), a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. The patient visited Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, with fluid in the lungs, kidney failure, and seizures.
The patient was under the supervision of Dr Padmaja Lokireddy, a haematologist and Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist and was provided with intensive therapy with a multidisciplinary team. They had respiratory specialists, nephrologists and intensivists in the medical team, who collaborated to stabilise the patient and deal with complications.
After six months of intensive chemotherapy and supportive therapy, the patient was in remission. Lung secretions cleared, renal activity returned to normal, and blood counts returned to normal, and he was discharged, preparing to come back to Somalia to undergo long-term maintenance therapy. This medication will last three years to provide a long-term cure and avoid a relapse.
The case recognises the importance of early diagnosis, early intervention, as well as advanced infrastructure, when treating complicated cases of leukaemia. It also reflects on the capacity of the hospital to offer patient-centred care through the means of international and multidisciplinary knowledge.
