Will was an active 36-year-old teacher who could run a half-marathon with little to no training. But during a weekend trip, a mild chest discomfort quickly escalated into a fight for his life, leading to a sudden need for a heart transplant.

Living with no physical limitations, Will was shocked when his sudden heart failure left him unable to walk across the room. After exhausting his initial treatment options, he was referred to the transplant center at Penn Medicine. In this patient story, Will shares his journey from the sudden onset of his symptoms, through his time on the transplant waitlist, to the life-changing call that gave him a second chance. Today, Will is back in the classroom and back on the court, showing up every day for the family, friends, and coworkers who supported him.
