The Silent Heart Risk in Thin Indians That Standard Tests Often Ignore | Healtcare | Sneha Mordani

A retrospective study of over 5,000 Indian patients reveals that standard cardiovascular risk assessments, primarily based on Western data, fail to identify approximately 80% of Indians at risk of a first heart attack. These individuals were often classified as low or moderate risk despite underlying metabolic dangers. Experts, including Dr Mohit Gupta, Professor of Cardiology at GB Pant Hospital, explain that the 'South Asian phenotype'—characterised by central obesity and insulin resistance even at a normal body weight—renders traditional BMI and LDL cholesterol markers insufficient. The report highlights that heart disease strikes Indians nearly a decade earlier than Western counterparts, often appearing as early as age 54. The 'thin-fat Indian' profile involves high visceral fat around organs, which remains hidden during standard checkups. To combat this, doctors recommend region-specific risk models and advanced screenings like DEXA scans, ultra-low dose CT scans, or waist-to-height ratio measurements to accurately quantify internal health risks and metabolic dysfunction.
