Understanding Gamma Knife Radiosurgery

Riverside Radiation Oncologist Harry Lomas, MD and Riverside Neurosurgeon William McCallister IV, MD explain how Gamma Knife radiosurgery works to target both benign and malignant lesions in the brain while minimizing impact to surrounding brain tissue. They explain how this treatment, applied between 1 and 5 sessions, depending on the specific patient, is able to target the tumor to within 0.4 mm. For those with malignant brain tumors, this allows patients time to go on systemic therapy (chemotherapy or immunotherapy) and live longer, higher quality lives. For those with benign conditions, the treatment targets the tumor, vascular malformation or nerves causing the issue. Learn more about the treatments offered at Riverside Radiosurgery Center.
