Channa R Jayasekera, MD, an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Transplant Hepatologist at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, AZ, shares insights from his article appearing in the April 2025 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where he notes 80% of the global burden of hepatocellular carcinoma occurs in lower income countries and that access to life-saving treatments there are hindered more by the cost of the treatments rather than the availability of medical oncologists and that these novel infusion-based treatments need to be developed so that when alternative curative-intent treatments like liver transplantation are inaccessible, there are still options for populations in greatest need.
