Setor K. Kunutsor, MD, PhD, a clinician-scientist in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, reviews his article appearing in the June issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings. In the study, he and his colleagues examined the risk of mortality associated with multimorbidity, defined as the presence of two or more long-term conditions, including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, chronic bronchitis, and other chronic lung diseases. Dr. Kunutsor found that in middle-aged and older men, multimorbidity was strongly associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death independent of established cardiovascular risk factors, and that this risk rose progressively with the number of coexisting health conditions.
