The event was held in The Hub at the Xcel Leisure centre in Walton On Thames. It was an opportunity for men who have received a Prostate cancer diagnosis to come together for an educational workshop. It was hosted by the Urology Oncology team at Ashford & St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust collaborating with colleagues from the Royal Surrey County Hospital.
Speakers from both trusts generously gave their time and expertise to talk about the advancements in treating prostate cancer. Mr Janardanan detailed the benefits of minimally invasive robotic assisted surgery. Dr Otter outlined the non-surgical options of hormone therapy, brachytherapy and radiotherapy. Mr Moussa shone a light on navigating intimacy after prostate cancer and Joshila DeVile specified the benefits of taking exercise to combat cancer related fatigue. The session ended with the expert panel taking questions from the audience, this again gave the opportunity for further knowledge to be shared.
Our partner organisation Macmillan along with a selection of charities and non-profit organisations attended the event to promote and share their support services in the community. Patients had an opportunity to visits their stalls and take away information.
Feedback from the event was very positive. The large success of the day was in providing information to help people understand their options and empower them to make the choices they feel are right for their own individual situations. The lasting message from the day was to highlight there are many options available to treat prostate cancer.
Don't ignore the signs, talk to your GP. Early detection really does save lives.
