A day after learning that she had breast cancer, Samantha “Sam” Edall found out she was in heart failure. Those two calls came six months after she nearly died after giving birth to her first child.

Understandably, Sam questioned how her body could handle anymore. And that’s why it was so important for her to find a team of medical professionals who could seamlessly take care of both the cancer and her heart.

Sam turned to VCU Health, where multidisciplinary collaboration is the cornerstone of patient care. The strong partnership between VCU Health Pauley Heart Center and VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center ensured that Sam’s treatment of breast cancer and heart failure could be managed at the same time.

Cardio-oncology, the type of multidisciplinary health care Sam received, is a unique type of cardiology that cares for cancer patients and survivors who also have heart health problems. The cardio-oncology program at VCU Health Pauley Heart Center is one of only two in Virginia and the only program recognized as a Gold-Certified Center of Excellence by the International Cardio-Oncology Society between Philadelphia and Charlotte.
