Once Seen as a Death Sentence, Now There’s Real Hope for Small Cell Lung Cancer Patients
Small cell lung cancer is one of the most aggressive and fast-moving types of cancer, but that’s no longer the whole story. Thanks to groundbreaking research, clinical trials, and early detection through screenings, LCFA Speakers Bureau patient advocates like Montessa Lee and Wendy Brooks are not only surviving, they’re speaking out.
Montessa’s journey began in 2006 while she was earning her master’s degree. After a life-saving screening and years of treatment, she completed her doctoral program and now advocates for lung cancer awareness and education nationwide.
Wendy, another small cell lung cancer survivor, reminds us of the emotional toll of living with the uncertainty of lung cancer, a treatable but not yet curable disease. She urges others to understand the uncertainty patients face daily and supports the research that brings real hope to the community.
In this episode of LCFA’s Hope With Answers podcast, Montessa joins LCFA-funded researcher Dr. Triparna Sen, an associate professor in the Department of Oncological Sciences and the director of the lung cancer PDX platform at the Icahn School of Medicine in Mount Sinai, New York, to explore the evolving landscape of small cell lung cancer treatment, including the promise of immunotherapy.
Wendy and Montessa’s stories show how early detection and research save lives.
