Why Does Fluid Accumulate in Stage 4 Colon Cancer?
In stage 4 colon cancer, fluid accumulation in the abdomen, known as malignant ascites, happens when cancer spreads to the peritoneum. This disrupts normal fluid absorption, causing swelling and discomfort in the abdomen.

What Is Malignant Ascites?
Malignant ascites is the buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity due to cancer. It occurs when cancer cells spread to the peritoneum, leading to fluid secretion and swelling inside the abdomen.

How Does Cancer Spread to the Peritoneum?
In stage 4 colon cancer, the tumor spreads beyond the colon to the peritoneum. This spread, called peritoneal carcinomatosis, leads to cancer cells releasing fluid and disrupting abdominal functions.

Why Doesn’t the Peritoneum Absorb Fluid?
When cancer cells cover the peritoneum, it blocks its ability to absorb excess fluid. This results in fluid accumulating in the abdomen, causing discomfort and swelling.

Can Other Conditions Cause Fluid Buildup in the Abdomen?
Yes, conditions like liver cirrhosis, heart failure, and kidney disease can also cause fluid buildup. These conditions disrupt normal fluid balance, leading to ascites in the abdomen.

What Tests Diagnose Fluid Accumulation?
Tests like CT scans, fluid sampling, and biopsies help identify the cause of fluid buildup. These tests distinguish whether the fluid is caused by cancer or other conditions.

How Is Malignant Ascites Treated?
Treatment options for malignant ascites include fluid drainage, chemotherapy, or palliative care. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and the patient's overall health condition.

What Are the Symptoms of Malignant Ascites?
Symptoms include abdominal bloating, discomfort while eating, breathing difficulties, and general fullness. These symptoms can greatly affect a patient's quality of life.
