Hello friends, I am Dr. Praveen Kammar. As a cancer surgeon, I often hear concerns about whether biopsy can cause cancer to spread. Many patients fear that inserting a needle into a tumor or removing a tissue sample might make cancer cells travel elsewhere. In this video, I will clarify the myths and facts about biopsy-related tumor spread and explain why biopsy is a critical tool in cancer diagnosis.

क्या Biopsy से Cancer फैलता है? | Does a Biopsy Really Spread Cancer? | Dr Praveen Kammar, Mumbai
Why is Biopsy Necessary?
Before starting treatment, we must identify the exact type of cancer. Different cancers behave differently, even within the same organ. A prostate cancer is entirely different from stomach cancer, and even within the stomach, there are multiple types of cancer requiring different treatments.
A biopsy is the only way to determine which specific cancer type a patient has. The choice of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and targeted therapy all depends on biopsy results. Without it, treatment might be ineffective.
Does Biopsy Increase the Risk of Tumor Spread?
A common concern is that a biopsy might cause cancer cells to spread. This fear comes from a concept called tumor seeding, where cancer cells could theoretically move along the biopsy needle’s path. However, scientific research has shown that this is extremely rare.
For deep-seated tumors, such as liver or pancreatic cancer, a biopsy involves passing through multiple tissue layers. While there is a theoretical risk of cancer cells spilling, the actual chance is less than 1-2%, and studies show it does not impact survival or treatment success.
Why Do Some Patients Believe Biopsy Spreads Cancer?
One reason is post-biopsy swelling. After a biopsy, inflammation can cause temporary swelling, making it appear as if the tumor has grown. Similarly, after an oral cancer biopsy, mild pain or bleeding might make patients think the cancer has worsened, when in reality, it’s just a normal healing response.
Final Thoughts
A biopsy is the most accurate and essential method for cancer diagnosis. The risk of cancer spreading from a biopsy is practically negligible, and not performing a biopsy can delay or misguide treatment.
If you have concerns about biopsy, consult your oncologist. Drop your questions in the comments, and I’ll be happy to address them.
