This lecture examines the prevalence and contributing factors of misdiagnosing aortic dissection (AD). Studies found that the overall rate of misdiagnosis for AD is substantial, affecting over one-third of patients. Key findings highlight that AD is often mistaken for more common conditions like acute coronary syndrome or pulmonary embolism due to overlapping symptoms. The authors stress the importance of clinicians maintaining a high index of suspicion for AD in patients presenting with chest pain, back pain, and syncope. Furthermore, the article concludes that a more detailed patient history and the early utilization of appropriate imaging are critical steps for improving diagnostic accuracy and reducing delays in treatment for this life-threatening condition.
