Can’t Tolerate Chemotherapy? These 5 Alternatives Might Help! #cancertreatment | Dr Praveen Kammar
Is chemotherapy the same for everyone?
No, it’s not. Chemotherapy doses are never one-size-fits-all. We calculate the dose based on your body surface area, height, weight, overall health, and other risk factors like heart, liver, or kidney conditions. Everything is customized.
Why do some patients struggle more than others during Chemo?
Some patients are more vulnerable due to malnutrition, pre-existing conditions, or general weakness. The intensity of chemotherapy and how your body handles it can vary widely. That’s why planning is done very carefully before starting any chemo cycle. Despite all precautions, some patients still face difficulties.
What if Chemo side effects become too serious?
Every side effect is graded — from mild (Grade 1) to very severe (Grade 4). We monitor each chemo session closely to catch complications early. If side effects hit Grade 3 or 4, we adjust the plan immediately. The goal is to prevent long-term harm while still treating the cancer effectively.
What are the options when chemotherapy is not tolerated?
There are five clear paths:
???????? Reduce the dose of the chemotherapy drug.
???????? Remove the specific drug causing the issue.
???????? Stop chemotherapy temporarily and allow recovery.
???????? Shift to the next treatment option — surgery or radiation, depending on the cancer stage.
???????? Switch to a different chemotherapy drug with fewer side effects.
Can you Restart chemo after stopping it?
Yes, in many cases. Once the patient recovers, we reassess and either restart the same drug at a lower dose or introduce a new agent. We don’t abandon treatment — we adjust it. The plan always depends on how the cancer is behaving and how the body is responding.
Weak Patients During Chemotherapy
For undernourished or high-risk patients, we often begin with single-agent or low-dose chemotherapy. If the response is good and side effects are minimal, we gradually increase the strength.
How is the final decision made for Chemotherapy?
No two patients are alike. That’s why decisions like dose reduction, drug change, or switching treatment paths must happen after discussing with your treating oncologist. It’s not about avoiding chemo — it’s about finding what works best for your situation.
