Is Melatonin Harming Your Heart? | Global Study Raises Serious Red Flags |News9

If you take melatonin to help you fall asleep tonight’s findings might make you think twice.

A major new global study presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions has raised serious red flags linking long-term melatonin use to a 90% higher risk of heart failure and nearly double the death rate over five years.

Researchers tracked more than 130,000 adults worldwide and found that those taking melatonin for over a year were significantly more likely to develop heart failure.

Experts say one possible reason is that synthetic melatonin the kind found in most over-the-counter supplements isn’t identical to the hormone our brain naturally produces at night. The body releases melatonin in tiny, precisely timed amounts, but many supplements contain 10 times that dose, and their labels often don’t reflect what’s really inside.

Over time, these high doses may disrupt the body’s natural sleep cycle, reduce its own melatonin production, and create dependency and hormonal imbalance.

Health experts now urge people to treat melatonin as a short-term aid, used sparingly and under medical advice while turning to safer, proven methods for lasting sleep health, like mindfulness, yoga, reading before bed, and proper sleep hygiene.

Important Note: This research is not yet peer-reviewed and shows a correlation, not causation. More studies are needed to confirm the link.
