Karen Tamulonis, BSN, RN, a finalist for the 2025 Cancer Nursing Today CARE Award, speaks about her background, her work as a pediatric hematology/oncology nurse at Rush University Medical Center, and what it means to be named a finalist.
About Karen Tamulonis, BSN, RN
Karen received her BSN at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1991. She has spent her entire career at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
She has 16 years of experience in inpatient pediatrics (med/surg, including oncology). Karen, who is a certified pediatric hematology/oncology nurse, also has 17 years of experience in pediatric infusion and care coordination for pediatric hematology/oncology.
Karen’s nominator on why she deserves the CARE Award:
“Karen is the kind of nurse that is always willing to help anyone without ever being asked to do so. She never seeks the spotlight but so deserves to be recognized for the impact that she has on the patients and families she cares for. For 34 years and counting, she has made an everlasting impact on pediatric patients and is a nursing legacy here in the pediatric oncology world at Rush."

Anna has been a nurse for about 5 years. She graduated from Purdue University with her BSN and master's degree in public health. The majority of her career has been spent in cancer care. Anna has worked as a stem cell transplant nurse and currently works as an infusion nurse at Rush University Medical Center, primarily working with patients who have breast cancer. Her passion is all things related to oncology.
