Radiation Therapy शुरू होने से पहले क्या होता है? Expert Talk with Dr Praveen Kammar & Dr Ajay Kolse
What happens during your first Radiation Oncology consultation?
Many patients believe radiation starts on the first day, but that is not the case. The first visit involves patient registration, a detailed review of PET, CT, and MRI reports, and an evaluation to confirm whether radiation therapy is actually required.
Why is cancer staging so important?
Cancer staging helps determine how far the disease has progressed and guides doctors in deciding the most effective and safe treatment plan. It is a critical foundation for any radiation therapy decision.
How is a radiation therapy plan created?
Once radiation is recommended, Dr Kolse and his team design a customized plan that usually lasts four to five weeks. Before starting, the doctor discusses the indication for radiation, the technique best suited for the specific cancer type such as 3D Conformal Radiation Therapy, IMRT, or Rapid Arc, possible side effects and how they will be managed, and the expected duration and follow-up schedule.
What happens after the first consultation?
Treatment does not start immediately. An immobilization procedure and a planning CT scan are performed to ensure precise patient positioning during every treatment session. Over the next four to five days, the tumor area and surrounding normal organs are carefully marked.
Is radiation duration the same for every patient?
Dr Kolse explains that the duration and dose vary according to the treatment intent and cancer site. Palliative treatments such as bone metastases from breast cancer may require one, five, or ten sittings, while curative treatments like post-surgery breast cancer radiation may take four to five weeks.
With modern advancements, treatment durations have reduced from six weeks to four weeks, and even one week in some fast-forward trials. For gynecologic cancers like cervical cancer, both external and internal radiation are often necessary.
