Chemotherapy और Immunotherapy में क्या अंतर है? | Cancer Treatment Explained! | Dr Praveen Kammar
Patients often ask: why do I need chemotherapy, and why not immunotherapy? This is usually because people focus on the side effects. So let’s break it down.
How does chemotherapy work?
Chemotherapy uses different drugs that attack rapidly dividing cells. These drugs target the genetic material of cells during various phases of cell division, preventing cancer cells from surviving.
The challenge is that chemo is non-specific. It doesn’t just attack cancer cells—it also affects normal fast-growing cells, like those in the digestive system and bone marrow. That’s why side effects like nausea, diarrhea, low hemoglobin, low platelets, and low white blood cells can happen. Still, tumors usually grow much faster than normal cells, so chemo hits them harder. Side effects vary for every patient.
What is immunotherapy?
Immunotherapy works differently. Instead of directly attacking cancer cells, it boosts the body’s immune system so it can recognize and kill them. It’s more targeted, focusing on specific receptors or antigens on cancer cells.
Does this mean immunotherapy has no side effects? Not exactly. If the immune system becomes overactive, it can affect other parts of the body. But these side effects are usually less broad and severe compared to chemo. The big advantage of immunotherapy is its specificity.
Key differences and combinations
Chemotherapy: cell-cycle specific but non-targeted.
Immunotherapy: highly specific to cancer cells.
Because they act in different ways, their side effects and results differ. In some cases, doctors even combine chemotherapy and immunotherapy for better outcomes.
