Setor K. Kunutsor, MD, PhD, a Professor and Research Chair in Cardiology from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, shares insights into his article appearing in the February 2026 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where looking at adiposity in older adults, he found a linear positive association between the visceral adiposity index which included BMI, waist circumference, triglicerides, and HDL cholesterol, and cardiometabolic multimorbidity risk, independent of established risk factors. He found the visceral adiposity index provides significant improvement in cardiometabolic multimorbidity risk prediction beyond established risk factors. Dr. Kunutsor notes this may be of benefit to clinicians who do not have access to advanced imaging modalities.
